We are excited to have our first author interview with Sophronia Belle Lyon. Sophronia grew up in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, reading HG Welles, Jules Verne and other classics. She is the author is The Alexander Legacy Series.
Do you write under a pen name?
My pen name for this series is Sophronia Belle Lyon. It was my grandmother’s maiden name, and I thought it fit the turn of the previous century setting of the series.
Tell us about your book The Alexander Legacy Series?
Steampunk is not a name people usually associate with Christian books but when I saw the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I was hooked. I wanted to write about classic Victorian-era characters, fantastic inventions, and believers with a cause of eternal worth. The Alexander Legacy Series features beloved and maybe some overlooked characters from Alcott, Dickens, Stevenson, Austen, Doyle, and Kipling. The first book, A Dodge, a Twist, and a Tobacconist, introduces a crimefighting, mystery-solving team committed to foiling a plot to enslave millions who are disappearing into Victorian London’s underground.
The second book, The ‘Pprentices, the Puppets, and the Pirates, explores the true meaning of rebirth, regeneration, and immortality. Oliver Twist is narrator, pursuing a career as an eccentric inventor while changing the lives of young people on both sides of the Channel. Didn’t you hate it when one of those great old books ended? Haven’t you wanted to put your favorite characters in new adventures and see their stories get a new life?
What has Christ taught you through the process of writing The Alexander Legacy Series and what are you praying that Christ will teach others from reading this book?
Christ has helped me to be true to the moral character lessons taught in classic stories, yet make them teach a clearer, distinctively Christian message. I have incorporated Scriptures and even sermons. The books have already attracted readers who didn’t expect a Christian message, but couldn’t stop reading or condemn the Christianity either. Steampunk is an offbeat genre but it’s growing in popularity. It often features strong female characters, fantasy and scifi elements, well-known classic characters like Sherlock Holmes, and element many readers already love. Haven’t you wanted to have a chance to influence people who wouldn’t pick up an obviously Christian book, with something they just couldn’t resist?
What Bible verse or verses are most applicable to The Alexander Legacy Series?
Luke 4:18 -- The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. Christ quoting Isaiah sums up the mission of the Alexander Legacy Company and my mission in this series. The characters marvel at the ability of God to save and heal anyone’s heart – people whom the world might dismiss as hopeless cases.
Do you have a book trailer?
Yes I do, please check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RpD7OpsRsc
What’s next? Will you be writing other books or creating more products?
I plan to continue the series with each of the main characters as a narrator of a book. Sluefoot Sue, from the Pecos Bill American tall tales, will narrate the next book, and include a lost Native American Tribe and attempts to get Pinocchio to guide their search for the demon of the desert. Zambo from Doyle’s The Lost World will take up the tale next. The company will travel into a subterranean, volcanic kingdom in Algeria on the track of a “controller of souls” known as the Desert Demon. Zambo has a passion to free the enslaved and found his wife in slavery in that country. What if Zambo’s curious young son discovers an unsuspected truth about those mysterious blue stones that Lord Roxton gave his father?
Tell us a little about yourself and what you like to do when you aren’t writing?
I grew up in Upstate New York. My husband and I travel the country and live in our Tractor Trailer as he drives. We live in our truck and visit all fifty states and Canada. I love to read, draw, craft, and visit our three grown children and friends along the way. The bio I created for Sophronia is all true of me as well. You can read about her on her facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/SophroniaBelleLyon
Finally, they say great authors are born from great readers, can you tell us about three books you just recently read and would recommend?
I recently read Descended—Jett by Dana Pratola, Trusting God with Your Future by Joana James, and am currently reading Armored Hearts by Pauline Creeden and Missy Lee. All three are strong Christian writers with a distinctive opportunity to reach people who might not otherwise pick up Christian books. Dana’s book is an amazing blend of mystery, romance, and the reclusive mystery man with a big secret. Joana’s book is the second in a series of “wisdom burst” devotionals about her personal struggles to trust God, so applicable to everyone’s life struggles. Armored Hearts is a Steampunk fantasy with an unusual perspective on arranged marriage.
